Does an apple a day really keep the doctor away?
It is one of the most widespread proverbs in the world, translated into dozens of languages and repeated by grandparents, parents, doctors and nutritionists:
“An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”
But is it really so? Or is it just a gentle way to convince us to eat more fruit?
Spoiler: Its not just a saying.

🌱 Origins of the proverb
The proverb originated in Wales in the 19th century as “Eat an apple on going to bed, and youll keep the doctor from earning his bread.”
Translated: “Eat an apple before going to sleep and you will prevent the doctor from earning his bread.”
Over time, the rhyme disappeared, but the concept remained: apples are good for you.
🍏 Why are apples so good for you?
Apples are an extraordinarily balanced fruit. They contain vitamins, fiber, antioxidants , and very little sugar compared to other fruits.
Average nutritional values (per 100 g of apple with peel):
Nutritious Amount Calories 52 kcal Carbohydrates 13.8 g Natural sugars 10 g Fibers 2.4 g Vitamin C 4.6 mg Potassium 107 mg Fun fact : most of the polyphenols are found in the peel, so its best not to peel it if its organic!
💪 The real (and proven) benefits
✔️ Regulates the intestine : thanks to pectin, a soluble fiber that nourishes the “good” bacteria.
✔️ Helps the heart : reduces LDL cholesterol and improves blood pressure.
✔️ Controls blood sugar : it has a low glycemic index and can reduce post-meal spikes.
✔️ Satiating effect : excellent for those who want to keep hunger at bay and lose weight.
✔️ Skins ally : rich in antioxidants that fight cellular aging.
🤔 Myth or reality?
The saying isnt a guarantee of immortality, but its clear that an apple a day can really improve overall health.
It doesnt replace a balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle, but its a small daily gesture that makes a difference.
🧺 How to include it in your diet?
- For breakfast with yogurt and whole grain cereals
- As a snack, maybe with natural peanut butter
- In the preparation of sugar-free cakes or crumbles
- Diced into salads for a crunchy, fresh touch.
Porridge Mele Miele e Cannella
